The present study describes the development of lipofuscin in the ECL cells of the rat stomach. These cells produce and secrete histamine in response to gastrin. They are rich in secretory vesicles, which fuse to form vacuoles in hypergastrinaemic rats.

Microdialysis was used to study how ischemia-evoked gastric mucosal injury affects rat stomach histamine, which resides in enterochromaffin-like (ECL) cells and mast cells. A microdialysis probe was inserted into the gastric submucosa, and the celiac artery …

Lindstro¨m&*,1R. Ha˚kanson 1Department of Pharmacology, Institute of Physiological Sciences, University of Lund, So¨lvegatan 10, Lund, Sweden Parietal cells (also known as oxyntic cells) are epithelial cells in the stomach that secrete hydrochloric acid (HCl) and intrinsic factor. These cells are located in the gastric glands found in the lining of the fundus and body regions of the stomach. ECL cells are scattered in the oxyntic glands, often in direct contact with parietal cells. The number of ECL cells in mammal stomachs varies greatly with species. ECL cells constitute 65% of the endocrine cell mass in rat oxyntic mucosa, whereas D cells represent a minor population of only 2–5% .

Parietal cell of stomach wall, located in the gastric glands secretes hydrochloric acid. Beautiful colorful drawing on an abstract  Enterochromaffin-like cells or ECL cells are a type of neuroendocrine cell found in the gastric glands of the gastric mucosa beneath the epithelium, in particular in the vicinity of parietal cells, that aid in the production of gastric acid via the release of histamine.

There are two types of histamine-storing cells in the stomach, ECL cells and classical mast cells. ECL cells are involved in the regulation of gastric acid secretion whereas mast cells are involved in mediating the immune response. Mast cells originate in the bone marrow and migrate to the stomach. In contrast, ECL cells originate in the gastric mucosa. The distribution of both ECL and mast cells varies with the species.

The 70‐year‐old patient has been treated for persistent gastric ulcers with a markedly increased plasma gastrin (5600 pg/mL). The stomach was surgically resected because of the obstruction associated with ulcer scars. Although the ECL cells do not seem to operate under cholinergic control (Lindström et al. 1997; Lindström & Håkanson, 2001; Norlén et al.

Ecl cells stomach

Histamine in the stomach occurs in endocrine cells (so-called enterochromaffin-like (ECL) cells), mast cells, and neurons. The ECL cells are peptide hormone-producing cells.

The cells respond to gastrin via cholecystokinin-2 (CCK2) receptors. A CCK2 receptor blockade was induced by treatment (for up to 8 weeks) with two receptor antagonists, YM022 and YF476.

They are important regulators of gastric acid secretion in the stomach by virtue of their histamine synthesizing and secreting capacity. Histamine in turn stimulates parietal cells to secrete acid. The ECL cell also contains the endocrine polypeptide chromogranin A (CGA) and CGA-derived peptides such as Keywords:ECL cells, histamine, gastrin, morphology, stomach, enterochromaffin, topology, gastrin stimulation, endocrine, paracrine.

Do they also operate under nervous control? The present study examines histamine mobilization from rat stomach ECL cells in situ in response to acute vagal excitation and to food or gastrin following vagal or sympathetic denervation.
