The esophagus forms in the first few months of fetal life as a long, hollow, continuous tube joining the mouth to the stomach. An esophageal atresia occurs when the esophagus is formed in two segments, and the baby is born with their esophagus not attached to their stomach. The upper part connects the mouth/throat to a blind pouch (proximal end), and the lower part connects the stomach to a blind pouch (distal end). In infants with esophageal atresia, the two ends of the esophagus do not meet. Esophageal atresia is a disorder of the digestive system in which the esophagus, the tube that normally carries food from the mouth to the stomach, does not develop properly before birth. In most cases, the upper esophagus ends and does not connect with the lower esophagus and stomach. The top end of the lower esophagus connects to the windpipe.

Esophageal atresia (EA) is a rare birth defect in which a baby is born without part of the esophagus (the tube that connects the mouth to the stomach). Instead of forming a tube between the mouth and the stomach, the esophagus grows in two separate segments that do not connect.
